Who we are

Know a little more

At the Institute, we transform the will to do good into action. We plant today to harvest tomorrow!

Opportunity
for the future

We rescue childhood by supporting children living in poverty and all types of hunger that go with it, such as: nutritional, educational, social, and cultural. We show them the real citizenship and the ways to break the cycle of misery.

Cidade estrutural /
Chácara Santa Luzia

Chácara Santa Luzia grew on the banks of the largest dump site in Latin America in 2000 – a site deactivated and relocated in January 2018. It is an “invasion” which is not on the Federal District official map. It is estimated that 10,000 inhabitants live in wooden shacks built on a violent environment with no basic infrastructure.

80 children with

The Institute

In 2017, the Institute was created. A building on the outskirts of Santa Luzia Slum was rented and remodeled to become the headquarters of the IDV. The gray building, which was originally used as warehouse for a construction company, gained color and was completely renovated and adapted to accommodate, daily, children who did not have the childhood they deserved. Santa Luzia Slum is a very poor area (next to the Brasília’s former dump site), located 15 km from the center of the country’s capital. It has the lowest Human Development Index (HDI) and the highest social vulnerability Index in the Federal District. So, the Institute is located very close to our children's homes, but in a regular area.

DONATING LIFE AND HOPE

WHY THIS REGION?

Chácara Santa Luzia grew next to the largest dump site in Latin America – closed in January 2018. In that region, violence, dirt and neglect threaten the health and well-being of the residents daily. The dump site was closed, but it is estimated that at least 10,000 inhabitants survive, in some way, from the disposal and waste produced by the population of the Federal District. The average income of residents is less than one Brazilian minimum wage. The invasion is not on the official map and those who live there experience the same reality of the favelas installed in many metropolitan areas around the world: there is no potable water, no sewage, electricity, or paved streets. Abandonment is everywhere. Everything is irregular and precarious. Children suffer the most. The Institute Donating Life for Rafa and Clara chose to benefit the Santa Luzia community so that would help to break the poverty cycle and give children a chance of a better life in the future.

WHAT MOTIVATES US IS THE MEMORY OF

RAFA AND CLARA

The idea of creating the Institute was the result of Rafaela’s dream: to do good and nourish vulnerable and poor children. IDV was conceived and has been conducted by the parents and friends of Rafaela Andrade, a nutritionist whose objective was to nourish children who suffer from poverty and hunger in Brasília. Rafaela and her daughter Clara were happy, loved each other and were extremely loved. Unfortunately, in August 2013, a fatal accident in Canada ended their life and dreams. Rafa was 26 and Clara was 2 years old.

Their early departure left a feeling of emptiness in everyone who loved them. Rafa and Clara, however, left a legacy of wishes and ideas that brought together hundreds of people with one purpose: to help the needy children and their families.

You can dream with us; you can change lives with us! IDV gives hope to a great number of children!

You can help!

Let’s work!

Our purpose

The impact

How it works

We want to mitigate today’s hunger to offer the future a better chance.
IDV’s work started with childcare, but it has been extended to help the children’s parents, siblings, grandparents, and neighbors. We believe that teaching the community the meaning of “citizenship” is also a way to transform their lives.
To break the cycle of misery, many times it is necessary to provide social assistance. The IDV does that, but also dedicates efforts to point out ways, showing children and their families that education, training and learning technical skills are effective paths to a better life.
